School Board Approves Sustainability Club Trip, Receives Communications Update

The Hudson School Board unanimously approved an overnight travel request for the Alvirne High School Sustainability Club and received an update on district communication efforts during its most recent meeting.

“The Sustainability Club would like to attend an overnight field trip, as they did the year prior, to the Youth Climate Leaders Academy,” Alvirne High School Principal Steve Beals explained. “I support the request and am providing information about the workshops and opportunities the students would have.”

Beals said the club’s teacher and advisor, Katie Murphy, shared the following information:
“I would like to bring a group of Alvirne students to this year’s YCLA (Youth Climate Leadership Conference), which will be held Dec. 4 – 5, 2026, in Vermont. The students attending would be members of the Sustainability Club. The students and I would miss one day of school.”

Murphy said up to six students from each school can attend.

“The cost per student is $50. While at this conference, students would attend workshops on various leadership topics and will also have time to work with their peers on developing a project that they will work on for the remainder of the school year,” she said. “Attendance at the conference also opens doors to grant funding that students can apply for, and they work with mentors in the real world who help them navigate the challenge they choose to pursue over the course of the school year.”

She added that she would drive the students to and from the conference using one of the Bronco vans.

Beals explained that if the School Board approved the request, the advisor would then complete a field trip form.

The School Board unanimously approved the travel request during the meeting.

During the superintendent’s report, Hudson Superintendent Dr. Dan Moulis provided an update on the work of the Communications Committee.

He said the committee recently met and now has new school and parent representatives.

“Which I’m pleased to report have joined our committee,” Moulis said.

Moulis said the district’s communications coordinator facilitates the meetings.

“He highlights some of the communication improvements we’ve had in the last year,” Moulis explained.

Those improvements include the district update sent out each week, enhancements to school newsletters, and updates in the district’s alumni newsletter.

“I also try to share that out with the Board as well,” Moulis said.

Moulis also pointed to the school district broadcasts produced with Hudson Community Television, including coverage of events and interviews.

The next Hudson School Board meeting is set for Nov. 9 at 6:30 p.m.
