Hudson residents had plenty to smile about during this year’s Patriotic Scarecrow Contest on Saturday, July 11.
The Hudson Historical Society event took place on the grounds of the Hills House and brought out a number of creative entries from local individuals, businesses, and community groups.
The American Legion Band performed at the event which began with rousing round of fire from the honor guard. Refreshments were also served.
The contest ended with a first place tie between Terry Emms and the American Legion, both earning top recognition for their standout scarecrows. Third place went to Joyce Hurd, who also submitted two entries this year.
Cash prizes were awarded, with $100 for first place, $75 for second, and $50 for third.
This year’s scarecrows were submitted by:

- Joyce Hurd (two entries)
- Priscilla Clegg
- Terry Emms
Organizers say they are already looking ahead to next year and hope to see even more participation from residents and local businesses.
The plan is to continue partnering with the American Legion to grow the event and make it an annual community tradition.
For now, the scarecrows will remain on display through Hudson Old Home Days, giving the public plenty of time to enjoy the creativity and hometown spirit behind each one.
