The Hudson Board of Selectmen paid tribute to former Selectwoman Kara Roy during its most recent meeting. Roy passed away on Aug. 4.
In a post on Facebook, Hudson Community Television reflected on her contributions: Kara was a valued part of the HCTV community and served as our department representative for many years. During the COVID19 pandemic, she visited our studio weekly on the program “Working Together for Hudson” to help provide important public safety information and updates to the residents of Hudson.

During the meeting, Board of Selectmen Vice Chair Bob Guessferd spoke about Roy’s impact on the community.
“Last Tuesday, the world – and more specifically Hudson – lost one of its outstanding citizens when Kara Roy, former Hudson Selectwoman, passed away after a courageous three year battle with cancer,” he said.
“She fought hard till the very end and is truly someone who I personally will never forget.”
Guessferd noted that Roy lived a life of service, “serving first as an Army Officer, and then as a civilian, served this Town in many ways, most notably as a member of this Board of Selectmen.” He also pointed out her service on the Library Board of Trustees.
“She was an avid reader and very passionate about the arts,” he said. “I’m proud to say that I served on this Board with her. She was someone who truly made a difference to those around her and to the citizens of Hudson and will be sorely missed.”
Selectman Heidi Jakoby offered her condolences to Roy’s family, friends, and the community.
“She was the individual who asked me to run for the Selectboard,” Jakoby said. “She saw leaders in many people and she had no problem reaching out to individuals and encouraging them to lead, encouraging them to stand for what they believe in, and encouraging them to help others.”
Jakoby said Roy “truly served passionately, and whether you agreed or disagreed, she was always willing to have the discussion.”
“I will truly miss her in so many ways… not only her friendship but her guidance. She is one of the people that I will continue to look up to,” Jakoby said, calling Roy a role model. She encouraged the community to take a moment to honor Roy’s work, noting she served two terms on the Board of Selectmen.
Selectman Xen Vurgaropulos said he didn’t know Roy well, but began interacting with her about a year before he was elected.
“I loved her energy,” he said. “She was very fierce, I would say,” noting she loved to have fun and be involved.
“But when she wanted to stand her ground, she stood her ground – and I respect that,” he said.
