The Alvirne High School Boys’ and Girls’ Basketball teams both started the new year by splitting wins and losses at home and on the road.
Starting on Tuesday night, Jan. 2, the Lady Broncos took on the Windham High School Jaguars and despite leading that team for most of the game, wound up falling in a narrow 38-37 decision.
The AHS squad had a 14-8 lead to finish up the first quarter, then went on to hold a 25-18 lead going into halftime.




In the second half, things went south for the Lady Broncos, scoring just 11-points throughout two quarters while giving up 19-points to the Jags.
The team’s results were significantly better three nights later when they traveled to Merrimack High School and doubled up the Lady Tomahawks by a score of 58-29.
The Broncos boys’ squad also suffered a narrow defeat to the Windham Jaguars.
The Hudson boys’ began the first week of the year at Windham High School and played a competitive game, but came up short, falling 53-50.
They had an optimistic start, finishing the first quarter up three points, at 17-13.
In the second period, the Jags started to take control, putting up another 13-points to the Broncos five-points, giving them a 26-22 lead by the half.
The Broncos were able to come out of the half and tie the game at 38-38 to end the third, but were outpaced in the final quarter for the narrow defeat.
Three nights later, at home, facing the Merrimack High School Tomahawks and a very vocal cheering section brought by the visitors, the Broncos came away with a 54-44 victory.
The AHS squad was able to take a narrow 14-13 lead as they entered into the second period and stretched the lead by five points at the end of the fist half, to lead 25-20.
The Alvirne defense limited Merrimack to 24-points in the second half and scored 29-points of their own for the eventual 10-point victory.
Both teams have just one game in the third week of the season. The boys will face the Winnacunnett Warriors on Wednesday, Jan. 10 and the girls will face the Lady Warriors at the seacoast on Thursday, Jan. 11.
