Alvirne Girls Lacrosse Falls to Hollis-Brookline, ConVal, Drop to 0-9

Girls’ lacrosse, like softball, played both their games this week on Monday and Tuesday, and they fell short in both efforts with Monday’s loss coming at the hands of Hollis-Brookline in a 19-3 blowout, and on Tuesday, the girls played their closest match of the season, falling 12-6 to ConVal in a battle of two winless squads that ended with the Broncos being the lone team to fail to get into the win column.

On Monday, the girls played host to a perennial title contender-the Hollis-Brookline Cavaliers. The Cavs came into Monday’s game at 6-3 and fresh off a 15-2 win over Pembroke Academy a couple of days before. Alvirne, on the other hand, entered at 0-7 while having the running-clock mercy rule inflicted in all seven of their contests to that point.

Both trends continued for the teams, as Hollis-Brookline scored at will on the Broncos, taking the game by a final score of 19-3. The Broncos had taken their eighth consecutive running-clock loss of the season and eleventh straight dating back to last season. The Cavaliers looked like they could be title contenders while the Broncos continued to struggle. Alvirne, with the loss fell further away from a playoff spot, and closer to elimination.

The Broncos had to have a quick memory, however, as they turned around and played ConVal on the road on Tuesday afternoon. Unfortunately for Alvirne, the Cougars managed to pick up their first win of the season by a score of 12-6. This was a step in the right direction for Alvirne, however. It was the first time that running clock did not come into play for the Broncos since May 19 of last season when the Broncos fell 11-5 to Pembroke Academy.

With this loss, the Broncos fall to 0-9 on the season and seem to be destined to be on the outside looking in to the playoff picture in 2024. The schedule does not get any easier for Alvirne, as they take on a one-loss Winnacunnet team on Monday, a Manchester Memorial-West team that already beat them 12-2 at home this season and a Pembroke Academy team that beat the ConVal Cougars 15-6 earlier in the season this week before closing out the season with Timberlane and John Stark-Hillsboro-Deering in the season’s final week.
